The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Scientific Research Affairs participates in the World Conference on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD 2026) in Paris.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Scientific Research Affairs participated, today, Wednesday, corresponding to July 15, 2026, in the proceedings of the World Conference on the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD 2026), hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its headquarters in the French capital Paris, under the slogan:
“Science in Action: Shaping a Sustainable and Equitable Future for All.”
The Undersecretary presented Iraq's vision for developing the higher education and scientific research system, transitioning towards an integrated system based on innovation, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence, and linking scientific research with national development priorities, in line with the goals of the International Decade of Sciences and the sustainable development agenda. He also emphasized the importance of enhancing international cooperation in the fields of water security, climate change, sustainable energy, and artificial intelligence, and transforming scientific knowledge into policies and initiatives with direct developmental impact, contributing to addressing global challenges and achieving sustainable development.
The conference is considered one of the most prominent international scientific events aimed at reviewing progress made in implementing the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033), with the participation of ministers and officials of higher education and scientific research, policymakers, university presidents, scientists, and representatives of international organizations, research institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations from various countries around the world. The first day of the conference featured high-level sessions addressing the future of global science policies, enhancing the role of sciences in achieving sustainable development goals, launching the network of national focal points for the International Decade of Sciences, as well as discussing mechanisms for transforming scientific knowledge into policies and practical actions that contribute to addressing global challenges, foremost among them climate change, water security, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development.
Iraq's participation in this international forum confirms the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research's keenness to enhance its presence in global scientific initiatives and expand horizons of cooperation with international organizations and institutions, supporting the development of the higher education and scientific research system, and consolidating the role of Iraqi universities in producing knowledge and innovation and linking scientific research with national priorities and sustainable development goals. The participation also represents an opportunity to exchange expertise and build new scientific partnerships with global universities and research institutions, and to enhance Iraq's position as an active partner in international efforts aimed at employing science and innovation in the service of sustainable development and evidence-based policymaking.
